Climate Action

Picture
BCK’s Climate Action Internship is a year-long program that provides instruction based on the four key climate action issues mirrored in most cities’ Climate Action Plans; Energy Conservation, Air Quality/Transportation, Solid Waste Diversion, Water Quality and Wastewater. Interns learn how each topic impacts climate change and what their city’s strategy is to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.  Students will play a key component in community education and outreach.
School Site Actions
Mirroring the framework of key topics in most cities’ Climate Action Plans and the engineering design process methodology, the staff at BCK Programs guide student interns to complete the following tasks:
  • Identify and define causes and impacts of climate change
  • Investigate local impacts through collection and analysis of climate-related data at each of the school sites (ex. air pollution “catchers,” lunch waste audit, energy audit, etc.)
  • Develop solutions to address identified issues
  • Implement feasible solutions at school and within the greater community
  • Publicly communicate their findings, actions, and recommendations to community stakeholders.
Outcomes
  • Quantitative campus-wide data of each audit for compliance documentation
  • Detailed report of structural and behavioral shifts
  • Community engagement in actively reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the school site and local neighborhoods
  • Applied science practices relating to NGSS Human Impacts on Earth Systems
  • Civic engagement through partnerships with local organizations and city officials
  • Service learning through solving real world problems
