Celebrate Earth Week at School with These Simple Activities!

Sample Activities: 
 Motorless Monday
  • Students write a note to parents to turn their engines off in the pick-up lane
  • Plan a walk, bike, or roll to school day
  • Make anti-idle posters and hang up in the pick-up lane
​Tubular Tuesday 
  • Assign a classroom light monitor to open Solatubes and turn light switches off
  • Students make light switch reminders and stick on all light switch plates (ex. Stop the Switch!)
Waste-free Wednesday
  • Bring reusable water bottles and waste free lunches. Hot lunch students SCRAP their lunch by properly composting and recycling their waste.
  • Students make morning announcements the day before to remind peers to bring waste-free lunches.
  • Students read about the worlds' 5 gyres and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, or watch this PBS video. 
​Learning Thursday
  • ​Teachers utilize Earth Day lessons provided by district Administrators
  • Teachers utilize Garden Activities provided by BCK Programs at bckprograms.com/garden
  • Have a conversation about Earth Day and why it's important
Litter-free Friday
  • Hold a litter-pick up event during recess, lunch, or as a class time activity. 
  • Hand out reward tickets for every 10 pieces of trash picked up

Announcement in School Newsletter
  • General alert that it’s Earth Day/Week
  • Link to web address with Earth Day tips
    • https://www.earthday.org/7-tips-to-recycle-better/
    • https://www.treehugger.com/tips-living-less-plastic-4858688
  • ​Choose a few of those tips and write them into the text
  • Ask PTA if you could create a “Green Corner” or “Green Team Notes” or “Did you know…?” to include in each newsletter going forward.   

Create an Earth Day Challenge
  • Invite students to try to do eight things on your challenge
  • ​Make one element connected to family (work with your family to make one change in your house)
  • Send home via teachers or 
  • ​Set up a table at lunch on Earth Day
  • Have the students explain what they did

Read an Earth Day Book​
  • Read an Earth Day book in your child's classroom or ask the school librarian to read Earth Day books to all students that week.
  • ​Lead a discussion
    • Ask kids what they think they can do to live more sustainably
    • ​What does earth give us?
    • What do HUMANS do that threaten our earth? (simple mechanisms)
    • ​What can we do differently and HOW does that help?
