Hometown: Carlsbad, California
University: San Jose State University
Area of Study: BA in Environmental Studies
How did your work with BCK Programs spark your passion for the environment?: When I was in elementary school, BCK Programs visited our school to educate students on environmental issues and established a club called Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan or “SWPPP.” The club met every Wednesday during lunch and also organized field trips. We learned how to test rainwater, went outside in the rain to take actual samples that were tested in a lab, and then we analyzed the results. Everything I learned in the program stuck with me and was my first step in becoming environmentally active. In fact, when I was in sixth grade, a few SWPPP club members and I gave a presentation to the local water board that was so well-received that we were invited to speak at the Tri-State Seminar for Water Professionals in Las Vegas, Nevada. BCK staff were always so kind and welcoming that I kept in touch with them throughout high school. Because of BCK, I can listen to the same information about the environment and never get bored with it, and I know I have found my passion.
Where are you now in your journey as an environmental steward and activist?: I am currently attending San Jose State University, where I am excited to connect with others with the same passion to protect the environment. I plan on finding internship opportunities with a company or organization that focuses on our environment and what we can do to safeguard and improve it. Additionally, since I am bilingual in English and Spanish, I plan to travel internationally with the knowledge I gain and spread environmental awareness worldwide to make the difference even greater.

Hometown: Carlsbad, California
University: MiraCosta College (Hoping to transfer to Stanford soon!)
Area of Study: BS in Operations Research and Financial Engineering
How did your work with BCK Programs spark your passion for the environment?: I began working with BCK Programs around the summer of 2023. My first hands-on experience was with hydroponics—learning how nutrients are delivered to plants through water-based systems—which immediately captured my interest. This direct involvement not only fueled my fascination with efficient gardening but also opened my eyes to the potential for environmental sustainability.
From that point forward, my passion gravitated toward every new opportunity to learn about hydroponics and witness its positive environmental impact. In 2024, while attending a Generative AI summer course at UCLA, I discovered their large-scale hydroponics garden near the housing units. The chance to speak with the maintenance team expanded my understanding even further. Inspired by these experiences, I initiated the creation of a hydroponic garden at my high school and established a water conservation club to motivate and involve other students.
To broaden community awareness, I led outreach presentations through BCK at the Elfin Forest Reserve and at community fairs organized by the Olivenhain Municipal Water District (OMWD). At these events, I encouraged participants to explore hydroponics and adopt water conservation strategies. Working with BCK Programs empowered me with the knowledge and leadership skills to launch high-impact projects and to inspire others to join me in building a more sustainable future.
Where are you now in your journey as an environmental steward and activist?: Since the UCLA Generative AI summer class and my exposure to large-scale hydroponics, I’ve always aspired to connect the dots between technology, AI, and sustainable agriculture. In early 2025, I had the opportunity to meet Professor Krishna Nemali at Purdue University, where we brainstormed the idea of researching and publishing a paper that combines AI with hydroponics.
Currently, I am the lead author of a research paper titled “AI-Driven Predictive Control System for Dynamic CO₂ Optimization in Large-Scale Hydroponic Warehouses.” Guided by Professor Nemali at Purdue (hydroponics) and Professor Anthony Mauro at UCSD (technical AI), I am advancing efforts to make indoor farming more energy-efficient and environmentally responsible through artificial intelligence. The outcome of this project, once published, has the potential to become a reference for future innovations in both sustainable agriculture and AI-driven environmental technologies, supporting others seeking practical ways to create positive change.
I am also deeply engaged in national hackathons focused on environmental and social impact. My project, CarbonFlow, is an AI-powered marketplace for CO₂, designed to give producers financial incentives to capture their CO₂ and connect them with industrial consumers who require recycled CO₂ for various applications. By facilitating these sustainable partnerships, CarbonFlow encourages carbon capture while supporting industries that benefit from CO₂ reuse.
CarbonFlow was recognized as a top finalist and runner-up at the Code4Hope Hackathon in August 2025. I was also invited to the Microsoft office in New York City in July 2025 to present CarbonFlow to technology executives, where the platform received awards for innovation and real-world impact—including recognition at KatyYouthHacks, a national hackathon emphasizing social good.
These experiences have motivated me to keep developing data-driven, AI-powered solutions for environmental challenges. I am committed to merging my passion for technology and sustainability to create measurable, positive change.
