BCK Programs offers a range of services that directly involve students in helping cities and school districts maximize waste diversion rates. BCK’s waste diversion programming also helps schools and cities comply with the requirements of California Senate Bill (SB) 1383 (reduce organic waste and greenhouse gas emissions).
BCK's waste diversion team collaborates across the spectrum of stakeholders including schools, districts, cities, and waste haulers to reduce landfill waste, right-size organics recycling programs, facilitate food waste reduction at the source, and coordinate local food recovery programs.
Behavior Change Solutions After analysis of food waste audit data, students shift attitudes about discarding recyclables and food waste in the trash bin. Then, they take the lead to inspire the entire school community to practice proper waste diversion. BCK instructors help students develop and design strategies to implement waste diversion best practices on their campus. Improvements/solutions can include:
Waste sorting stations in the lunch area
A "Share Table" or "Share Basket" for recoverable food
Building partnerships with local food banks to donate excess food
Starting on-site composting of fruit and vegetable scraps (students participate in every part of the composting process!)
